WIS 26 corridor - Expansion project - Segment 7, Johnson Creek to Watertown

Schedule | Maps | Meetings | Newsletters/others

Project overview

Segment 7 consists of reconstructing four miles of the existing highway between the village of Johnson Creek and the city of Watertown and constructing an eight mile freeway to carry WIS 26 traffic around the west side of the city of Watertown and north to the intersection with County Q.

The highway will be expanded to two lanes in each direction with a grass median. South of the city of Watertown, at-grade side road and driveway intersections will remain, although driveways will be combined to a single access point or moved to a side road where possible. Median crossing points will be widely spaced to improve safety, so some intersections and driveways will be limited to right in/right out movements. Right turn lanes will be added at all side road intersections and left turn lanes will be added at each median crossing.

At the south end of the bypass around Watertown, existing WIS 26 and County Y will be realigned to meet at a new diamond interchange. Another diamond interchange will be built on the west side at WIS 19. At the north end, the existing interchange with WIS 16 will be replaced and WIS 16 will be extended west to a new "trumpet-style" interchange just east of the Provimi and Welsh Road intersection.

Bridges will be constructed at county highways Y, A and T, Welsh Road and Silver Creek Road (which will be extended west to Welsh Road). These bridges will provide local traffic crossings over or under, but not onto, WIS 26. A frontage road will be built along the east side of the bypass between County Y and County A, including a bridge over the Rock River. The section of existing WIS 26 in the city and town of Watertown will be jurisdictionally transferred to these local governments when the new bypass is opened to traffic.

Schedule

Real estate acquisition began in 2007.

Construction of segment 7 is scheduled to occur begin in 2009 and extend through 2012. The estimated construction cost is $79 million in 2008 dollars.
