Work completed since last update:

  • The contractor installed watermain along Tower Avenue from 4th street to 6th street and a second crew began installing sanitary sewer along Tower Avenue beginning at 4th street and is working to the south.
  •  Concrete sawing in front of buildings along the entire project length has been done in order to prep for future sidewalk removal.

Anticipated work schedule for the week of: May 13, 2013:

  • Contractor will continue with sanitary sewer construction between 4th and 6th Street. The contractor anticipates having the watermain between 4th street and 6th street complete and will begin installing both permanent water and sewer services to buildings along this segment.
  • It is expected that temporary watermain and services will be hooked up to buildings between 6th street and 8th so contractor can begin removing the existing watermain and installing the new watermain along Tower Avenue between 6th street and 8th street.
  •  Another crew is scheduled to begin removing concrete pavement along Tower Avenue south of the railroad tracks and continue towards Belknap Street.
A meeting for businesses and the contractor will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 2 p.m. in the Lake Superior Room at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation headquarters in Superior.

Due to the deep trench work for utility replacements, it is not feasible to leave Tower Avenue open to traffic.
  • WIS 35 (Tower Avenue) will be closed from Belknap Street to 3rd Street during construction.
  • 3rd Street to Hughitt Avenue will be single lane in each direction.
  • All intersections open to cross street access will be closed at one time
  • Crossing side streets will be open whenever feasible and safe.
  • Local business traffic to utilize back streets and alleys.
  • Duluth Transit Authority: Route numbers 16 and 17 buses will detour Tower Avenue during construction. For more information on routes visit: www.duluthtransit.com/feed/detour/499
