Components - Enhanced reference markers

Enhanced reference markers are designed to save time in identifying locations of disabled motorists to improve emergency response times to highway incidents. Enhanced reference markers are installed in Dane and Milwaukee counties. Specific benefits of these markers include:

• Faster emergency responses
• Faster traffic incident clearance
• Fewer crash related delays
• Fewer secondary crashes

In Milwaukee County, enhanced reference markers are installed in the median at each one-tenth mile on I-94 from the Milwaukee County line to Racine County line and on US 45 from the Zoo Interchange to the county line.

The green marker includes the I-94 shield above the mile marker number which designates the number of miles on I-94 to the Minnesota border. Under the mile marker number is another number, zero through nine, noting the distance in tenths of one-mile from the previous mile marker. The enhanced reference signs on I-94 were the first to be installed on a Wisconsin freeway system.

In Dane County, enhanced reference markers are blue and include the direction of travel, route number, and mile number. Reference markers are placed every two-tenths of a mile along the median of the highway.

The signs are currently installed along Madison's Beltline (US 12) and portions of the Interstate system (I-90/94). Signs will be installed in the future at additional locations recommended by the 911 communications center.
